Timeline for Adopting the Common Core Standards
8/19/2010
The California School Board Association (CSBA) just disseminated a 'Fact Sheet' on the adoption of the new Common Core Standards. In the fact sheet CSBA provides a timeline for implementation. It is titled "Adoption Milestones." They reference the adoption by the State Board of Education (SBE) as August 2, 2010. The next critical date is January, 2012 for Math and January, 2014 for English Language Arts, when the SBE will adopt frameworks, launch the instructional materials adoption process and launch professional development. The next critical date will August, 2014 for Math and August, 2016 for ELA when SBE adopts instructional materials. And, finally, the first print materials available for LEA's will be December, 2014 for Math and December, 2016 for ELA.
No one can accuse the State Board of Education of rushing into this adoption. It is partly a recognition of how much re-training of teachers and re-designing of textbooks will be necessary, and also a recognition of how little money is available for staff development until the state-wide economy rebounds.
I am one who believes that the re-training of teachers and the re-structuring of schools can begin now and at relatively little cost. My website: www.readfirst.net contains a number of recommendations for how this can happen.
